The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a Kenya-based organization whose mission is to generate evidence to drive policy action to improve the health and well-being of African people.


The Clinton Health Access Initiative in Liberia (CHAI) is a global health organization committed to saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low- and middle-income countries. CHAI works with partners to strengthen the capabilities of governments and the private sector to create and sustain high-quality health systems that can succeed on their own.

The National Statistics Office in Sierra Leone is the central authority for the collection, processing, analysis and dissemination of accurate, clear, relevant, timely and high-quality statistical information on social, health, demographic, economic and financial activities to serve the needs of users, including government and the general public.

Purpose of the collaboration

APHRC sought capacity support as they embarked on the first-ever study in Sierra Leone that gathered abortion-related evidence on incidence, morbidity and facility-based quality of care. The Guttmacher Institute provided in-depth technical assistance on generating and communicating abortion evidence.

Capacity strengthening activities accomplished

  • Technical assistance provided to APHRC as the group oversaw data collection and analysis in Sierra Leone.
  • Conducted six online skills-building webinars for researchers, advocates and civil society groups working toward advancing safe abortion in Sierra Leone.
