About Us
This first publicly available version of the Toolkit for Abortion Research and Advocacy in Africa (TARAA) was developed by the Guttmacher Institute working with AISE Consulting and Guttmacher’s partners in Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone. This site will continue to evolve under the leadership of African abortion researchers and advocates.
The Guttmacher Institute has long led the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) field in producing information on the measurement of the incidence, health impact and economic consequences of unsafe abortion. This U.S. organization has a longstanding commitment to sharing these skills by engaging in impactful collaborations with research and communications partners based in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
Guttmacher is recognized as a center of excellence in translating abortion data for policy change, with the impact of the Institute’s research resting in our ability to put evidence into accessible language, place it in a policy frame, and disseminate it in a timely and targeted manner among changemakers at the national, regional and global levels. Between 2021 to 2023, Guttmacher had the opportunity to put capacity strengthening activities center stage. With a grant from an anonymous donor, the Institute engaged in deep partnership with institutions in five LMICs to strengthen abortion research capacity and to strengthen partners’ capacity to effectively communicate and advocate for evidence-based policy change that would increase access to safe abortion.
