Purpose of the collaboration

This initiative brought together new and established abortion researchers in Nigeria to strengthen their skills in independently conducting high-quality abortion research, facilitate collaboration among local abortion researchers and communicate new evidence to key audiences. It also brought together communications practitioners and advocates to strengthen their capacity to effectively communicate timely evidence and respond to opportunities to bring evidence into dialogues that could influence policy around sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Capacity strengthening activities accomplished

  • Stakeholder meetings that led to the establishment of the Capacity Strengthening for Abortion Research in Nigeria (CSARN) consortium.
  • Stakeholder meetings to share in-country evidence on the informal sale and use of misoprostol for abortion and to discuss recommendations to improve access to safe abortion care.
  • Conducted a stakeholder mapping to identify local abortion researchers.
  • Conducted a needs assessment, including a survey among public health and medical practitioners, social scientists, policymakers, journalists and advocates, to identify research gaps and critical issues related to abortion in Nigeria.
  • Stakeholder meetings to develop a training curriculum for strengthening the capacity to conduct abortion research in Nigeria.
  • Conducted four abortion research capacity strengthening training workshops for junior and early career researchers.
  • Developed a year-long mentorship program for 25 Fellows which supported them to conduct an independent abortion-related research study and submit a manuscript for publication.
  • Convened youth advocates, journalists, digital content creators, researchers and policy influencers in a series of trainings and workshops focusing on communications and advocacy for sexual and reproductive health and rights in Nigeria.
  • Developed an annual fellowship program — Communicating Evidence for Policy Advocacy and Action (C4SPAA) — for 10 participants to propose and implement projects in their communities. Fellows were paired with and guided by communications experts.
