This Powerpoint provides an overview of the major data collection approaches for studying abortion:
This Powerpoint provides an overview of the major data collection approaches for studying abortion:
– Health Facility Survey (HFS)
– Community-based Survey (CBS)
– Surveillance System (SS)
– Health Professional Survey (HPS)
– Survey of Informal Abortion Providers
The presentation of each approach focuses on:
– Representativeness and coverage of the approach
– Type of abortion information it collects
– Limitation of data from the approach
A second section, “From Research to Impact: Communicating Evidence for Advocacy” covers the utility of data for advocacy, identifying target audiences, mapping desired outcomes, communicating the evidence, and developing key messages.

This presentation discusses details of setting up and conducting the PMS (Prospective Morbidity Survey) and how to track quality of the clinical data obtained.
This resource is part of a series of trainings on AICM (Abortion Incidence Complications Methodology) carried out by the African Population and Health Center (APHRC) and the Guttmacher Institute.
Onikepe Owolabi
This presentation discusses the key sources of data for AICM and how to estimate age-specific abortions while accounting for other types of pregnancy losses. Also includes a country example.

Akinrinola Bankole
This PowerPoint discusses using the Prospective Morbidity Survey (PMS) to measure complications from abortion that are treated in a facility.
Aims and Objectives:
• To assess the frequency of abortion-related complications
• To provide detailed data on the severity of complications
• To provide detailed data on the clinical care women receive
• To assess the factors associated with varying severity of complications
• To explore the experiences of care for women receiving PAC
• It can provide data for detailed costing studies

This PowerPoint discusses Open Science—science that is transparent in its methods and accessible to everyone; and how practically, Open Science can mean a lot of different things to different people. Open Science ties into both the equitable distribution of scientific knowledge, as well as the reliability of results. The training covers the principles of reproducibility and transparent qualitative research and how to achieve both.

This PowerPoint covers Direct and Indirect methods for measuring abortion incidence with emphasis on AICM (Abortion Incidence Complications Methodology). It presents the advantages and disadvantages of AICM and introduces the Health Facility Survey (HFS).

This Powerpoint covers key questions to ask respondents in health facilities as part of a Health Facilities Survey (HFS). It also discusses best practices for interviews and when to use annual caseloads and past/average month caseloads.

This PowerPoint discusses the use of Medication abortion, specifically Mifepristone and Misoprostol.

This PowerPoint defines spontaneous abortion, discusses two assumptions in estimating the number of cases due to miscarriage, provides steps for making estimates of miscarriages along with an example of using estimates in calculating the total number of PAC cases due to induced abortions.

Onikepe Owalabi
This PowerPoint discusses using the HPS (Health Professionals Survey) to measure the proportion of women having an abortion who did not obtain care in health care facilities. The training includes an overview of AICM, identifying the sample of respondents and key survey questions.

This PowerPoint discusses how to calculate total PAC (Postabortion care) cases in a country and provides detailed examples.
Calculating PAC cases:
• For each facility providing PAC, calculate the yearly totals from typical and past monthly estimates
• Calculate the average of the typical and past year estimates for outpatients and inpatients separately
• Sum the average values of outpatient and inpatient estimate to get TOTAL yearly PAC cases for facility
• Add all facility estimates to get total number of PAC cases for the sample
