Resources

This resource is from the Capacity Strengthening for Abortion Research in Nigeria (CSARN) project. The material was developed as teaching modules for project Fellows who are early-career abortion researchers in Nigeria.

The session focuses on values clarification, complexities in abortion issues and research in Nigeria (and would apply to similar legally restrictive setting), particularly the role that restrictive laws play in complicating access to abortion services for women and young girls, as well as the judgmental cultural and religious perceptions of the phenomena.

The presentation covers basic concepts of multi-disciplinary issues in abortion studies, application of critical thinking skills to abortion research, and identifying research gaps. Those who participated in this session also learned about the effectiveness of multidisciplinary approaches and identifying root causes of SRH problems instead of its symptoms. Participants were introduced to value systems, their role in decision-making and they participated in a short value clarification exercise. Participants critically analyzed two case studies during practice sessions to further establish the lessons learned in the module.

This resource is from the Capacity Strengthening for Abortion Research in Nigeria (CSARN) project. The material was developed as teaching modules for project Fellows who are early-career abortion researchers in Nigeria.

This presentation covers the basics of ethics in research and its relationship to abortion in the Nigerian context, as well as the application processes for ethical approval in Nigeria. During this session, ethics was defined as a determination of what is good or bad in the process of conceiving, conducting, and reporting research findings and the determination of acceptable boundaries in conducting research. Facilitators highlighted principles of research ethics like maximizing the benefits and minimizing the risk of their research, conducting research with justice and autonomy, respecting people’s (i.e. research subjects') confidentiality and privacy. Ethics of research publications, and how to avoid plagiarism, identify and avoid predatory publishers were discussed.

Some of the key ethical issues in abortion discussed include – limited capacity for oversight on research on abortion, challenges in getting informed consent from parents of adolescents, ensuring privacy during interviews, risk of emotional harm, judgmental interviewers, issues around getting respondents to recruit and meet expected targets and the issues of confidentiality. Some of the highlighted ideas on how to resolve these dilemmas include training research staff as well as ethics and research committee, and also provision of guidelines to assist in recruiting participants, getting informed consent, and supporting participants.

Participants also learned different examples of misconduct in research such as salami slicing, fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, honorary authorship, and undeserved exclusion in authorship. Facilitators highlighted requirements for authorship, the responsibilities of a scientist, the ethics of data sharing, and some of the red flags for predatory publishers. Participants participated in a practical session on research misconduct.

Capacity Strengthening

This resource is from the Capacity Strengthening for Abortion Research in Nigeria (CSARN) project. The material was developed as teaching modules for project Fellows who are early-career abortion researchers in Nigeria.

The presentation focuses on key terminologies, concepts, and landscapes of abortion in Nigeria to aid research engagements. Topics include the classification of abortion by safety, the dynamics of safe and unsafe abortion costs for public health and health systems, factors associated with, and burden of unsafe abortion globally and nationally, as well as approaches to preventing/reducing unsafe abortion incidences.

Usage of terms like ‘safe’ and ‘unsafe, ‘spontaneous’ and ‘induced’, ‘complete’ and ‘incomplete’, ‘medical’ and ‘surgical’ in describing abortion processes was explained to participants. Facilitators highlighted that young women and girls from marginalized or underprivileged backgrounds are most vulnerable to unsafe abortion. Participants were exposed to public health frameworks for intervention (primordial, primary, secondary and tertiary), as well as strategic action pillars for preventing unsafe abortion.

This presentation introduces mainstream concepts in abortion research and how they can be measured, how to identify potential sources of abortion data, and how to combine contexts with other variables as data sources for generating measures of abortion concepts. The presentation covers basic abortion concepts and measurements/indicators, how to identify a good measure, and how to calculate numerators, denominators, and proportions when conceiving/ designing abortion research. The second part of the presentation focuses on abortion data sources and approaches, including the Health Facility Survey (HFS), Community-based Survey (CBS), Health Survey System (HSS), Health Professional Survey (HPS), and Survey of Informal Abortion Providers (SIAP).

This presentation covers how to identify, access, obtain, explore, and analyze data from selected secondary data sources. It includes some major databases for sourcing abortion-related secondary data including Guttmacher Institute’s, PMA, DHS, and MICS. The advantages and limitations of secondary data were discussed, and methods of obtaining secondary data were demonstrated to the participants. Fellows were divided into five groups in which they practicalized accessing and obtaining secondary data from the DHS database. They also explored the analysis of the data downloaded choosing a topic of interest and presenting preliminary findings during a plenary session.

In 2019, Marie Stopes International launched the #SmashAbortionStigma campaign to shine a light on the widespread stigma faced by women who access safe abortion care. Through this multichannel campaign, they hoped to promote open conversations about abortion by calling on people to break the silence. Using their social media channels, website, and the voices of supporters to amplify support for choice, they wanted to show women that they are supported and not alone.
